Day 23:  Spring into a Clean Punch List – Tackle the Tasks You recorded During our Journey

Welcome to Day  23 – the last day - of Spring into Clean with Staged for Living! Today we are going to revisit your Punch list. You have been (hopefully) jotting down tasks on Worksheet 3: Your Spring Clean Punch List that you need to do. Today, we are going to start those tasks. By the end of today, you will have made a small dent in your punch list.

Handy Tools:

  • The Ultimate Spring Clean Toolkit PDF

  • Clipboard with Worksheets 1-4

  • Anything needed for your punch list

Simple Steps:

  1. Look at your punch list and group together like tasks.

  2. Decide on an order and timeline for finishing the list.

  3. Decide what task you would like to start today. For example, if you have “touch up trim paint” written for several rooms, go to the paint store, buy a small amount of trim paint and some cheap brushes, and get started!

  4. Continue with the next group of tasks until all are completed.

Staged for Living Pro Tips:

  • Organize Your List – Group related items together. For instance, if you have a lot of pictures to hang, hang them in one session.

  • Set goals for each group of tasks – I like to set goals by months. Maybe your list is short, so your goal is to finish it in one month. Or maybe it’s super long and reasonably it will take the rest of the year. Be realistic.

  • Break the tasks into manageable parts – Maybe one day you go buy the paint supplies and the next day you paint. Maybe you just make that phone call looking for recommendations for carpet replacement.

  • Give yourself as much time as you need – It’s a marathon, not a sprint. Unless you want to sprint. Then go for it!

  • Enlist help from family and friends – Does your teen need extra chores? Does your husband have a different skill set than you? Does your bestie want to spend time with you, and she doesn’t care how you spend it? Enlist their help!

  • Hire people to perform some of the items on the list – Hire the teen boy down the street to fix that piece of furniture or add boxes to the attic. Hire an electrician to fix that switch that isn’t working. We all have different skills! And time is money.

By the end of today, your punch list should be fairly organized, and you should have a basic timeline in mind.

Thank you so much for participating in Spring into Clean with Staged for Living! It has been such a productive month, and I hope it blessed you and your family as much as it did mine! See you next year!

Spring into a Clean Kitchen – A Fresh Start for the Heart of Your Home!

Days 15-16: Spring into a Clean Kitchen – A Fresh Start for the Heart of Your Home!

Welcome to Days 15 and 16 of Spring into Clean with Staged for Living!

The kitchen is the heart of the home, and today, we’re giving it the deep clean and refresh it deserves. Ready to tackle the dust, wipe down surfaces, and create a kitchen that feels as fresh as your favorite spring recipe? Let’s dive into a two-day (it’s a doozy!) spring clean in your kitchen and make it a spotless, welcoming space for all your culinary creations!

Handy Tools:

Simple Steps:

  1. Straighten up the area, moving misplaced items to their designated spaces. Keep only what is useful or beautiful in the kitchen.

  2. Follow the order in the laminated Worksheet 2: Step-by-Step Spring Clean Blueprint

  3. Mark off tasks (with a dry-erase marker) that do not apply to this room.

  4. Mark off each task as you finish it.

  5. Clean the exhaust fan cover. Yuck!

  6. Vacuum above the cabinets if they don’t go to the ceiling.

  7. Clean pantry shelves starting at the top. Straighten as you go.

  8. Clean the shelves in the cabinets. Line them with shelf liner if desired.

  9. Clean the outside of the cabinets.

  10. Clean backsplash.

  11. Clean the top, inside, and outside of your refrigerator and freezer. Throw away expired food.

  12. Empty the recycle bin and wash it.

  13. Clean the stove and oven.

  14. Run a phantom load in the dishwasher to clean it. Clean filter.

  15. Scrub sink and counters.

  16. Put out fresh towels.

  17. Throw dirties in the hamper.

  18. Put related items together so you can find things easily.

  19. When you finish cleaning the kitchen, erase all marks with a dry paper towel to get ready for the next space.

Staged for Living Pro Tips:

  • Split this clean into at least two days - It’s a lot.

  • Consider using linen napkins – And wash them. This cuts down on paper use.

  • Consider moving paper towels under the sink – Use dish cloths instead. This also cuts down on paper use and expense.

  • Wipe down counters, run dishes, sweep, and reset kitchen daily – This is my favorite daily routine because it makes such a difference in how the house runs and looks!

  • Put used sponges in dishwasher – I don’t love sponges because of the germs they carry, but if your use them, refresh them in the dishwasher with each load.

  • Remember to run your exhaust fan while cooking - Your house will thank you.

By the end of these two (or so) days, your kitchen will be sparkling clean and organized, making it a more inviting and efficient space for cooking and gathering. With everything in its place and surfaces gleaming, you’ll be ready to enjoy a fresh, functional kitchen for the season ahead!

Spring into a Clean Mudroom – A Fresh Start for Your Drop Zone!

Day 4: Spring into a Clean Mudroom – A Fresh Start for Your Drop Zone!

Your mudroom is where the mess usually starts, but today we’re transforming it into a neat, clean space! Ready to make this hardworking area fresh and functional for the season ahead? Let’s dive into spring cleaning your mudroom!

Handy Tools:

Simple Steps:

  1. Straighten up the area, moving items to their designated spaces. Keep only what is useful or beautiful in the room.

  2. Follow the order in the laminated Worksheet 2: Step-by-Step Spring Clean Blueprint

  3. Mark off tasks (with a dry-erase marker) that do not apply to this room.

  4. Mark off each task as you finish it.

  5. When finished cleaning the mudroom, erase all marks with a dry paper towel to get ready for the next space.

  6. If this is where you store your pet food bowls, give them a good scrubbing. Scrub the floor under them, as well.

  7. Pack up your toolkit for tomorrow.

Staged for Living Pro Tips:

  • Keep the mudroom minimal – You want your guests and family to move easily through the mudroom. Don’t over furnish or over decorate.

  • Use a basket for shoe storage – Contain those shoes! People often walk in the house through the mudroom. The whole purpose of this room is to keep the mud/dirt/germs IN it. Encourage family to leave shoes in the basket.

  • Add a small bench -  Sitting helps people put on and take off shoes.

  • Add hidden storage – Hide those winter coats and hats. Too much visual clutter can make a space seem dirty and stressful.

  • Use a patterned rug – Catch the dirt before it enters the rest of your house. A patterned rug will stay nice looking longer than a solid one.

By the end of today’s mudroom clean, you’ll have a clutter-free, fresh space that keeps the mud where it belongs. With just a few simple adjustments, your mudroom will be functional, fresh, and ready for all the busy days ahead!

Looking forward to springing into cleaning with you tomorrow!

  10. Wash laundry baskets. (I like to take them outside to the hose and use dish soap and a rag.)

  11. Clean the vacuum filter.

  12. When finished cleaning the room, erase all marks with a dry paper towel to get ready for the next space.

  13. Pack up your toolkit for tomorrow.

Staged for Living Pro Tips:

  • Keep the laundry room minimal – The fewer items in there, the more room you have!

  • Add curtains if you don’t have cabinets – I don’t have upper cabinets, so I used a curtain rod and made curtains to hide all the stored stuff such as extra laundry soap and vacuum parts. It looks so much better.

  • Stackable laundry baskets are awesome – My laundry room is small, so the stackable Container Store laundry baskets save my life! I have one for each family member.

  • Hang as many tools as possible – Get those tools (brooms, stick vacs, ironing board) off the floor! The floor is so much easier to clean when items are elevated.

  • Have a small trash can in the laundry room – for dryer lint. Life. Saved. I promise.

By the end of today’s laundry room clean, you’ll have a space that feels neat, inviting, and ready for the season ahead. With these simple steps, your laundry room will feel fresh for everyone who uses it!

See you tomorrow for more spring-cleaning fun.

Handy Tools:

  4. Mark off each task as you finish it.

Staged for Living Pro Tips:

  • Label shelves with sheet and blanket sizes - For easy identification.

  • Buy matching towel set – So they don’t get all mixed up.

  • Hang a hook or two inside the door – this is handy to hang items such as tablecloths, runners, or whatever you need. It adds a little extra space.

Declutter Your Home in 23 Days {Days 18-23}

Introduction:

Since January 1, we’ve been on a decluttering journey in our homes, and it’s been amazing to see the progress! We’ve worked on so many areas. Here’s a quick recap of what we’ve done so far.

We started with the kitchen. It feels so good to open cabinets and drawers and not see a lot of stuff we don’t use. Next, we moved to the bedrooms and closets. Now, it’s easier to find clothes we actually wear and love and we have a calm place to sleep. After that, we tackled the bathrooms, laundry room, and entryway. These spaces now feel so much more decluttered and more organized.

We didn’t stop there! We worked on the hallways, home office, and dining room. Even the paper clutter and bookshelves got some love. It’s such a relief to have less piling up and more space to enjoy.

The best part? We didn’t need fancy tools to get it done. We used a simple four-box method: Give Away, Store Away, Throw Away, and Put Away.

This method made it easy to categorize excess, stay focused, and make decisions. Now, our homes feel so much lighter and more peaceful.

Supplies Needed for Decluttering:

·       Medium or large boxes

·       Packing tape

·       Trash bags

·       Permanent marker

·       Piece of paper (for your list of needed items)

·       Packing paper

·       Four labels – put away, store away, give away, and throw away.

Review of Four Box Method:

  • Put Away Box: For items that belong in another space. For instance, if you come across your daughter’s sneakers while going through the entry, they go in this box. She most likely has a designated spot for shoes in her room.

  • Throw Away Box: For trash or items with no further use, like candy wrappers or gas station receipts from 3 years ago.

  • Give Away Box: For things you no longer need or want but could be useful or loved by someone else. That candle you will never burn -  Perfect for this box. Your fourth set of dishes would be great here, too.

  • Store Away Box: For sentimental or seasonal items, you want to keep but do not need out right now, such as a photo of your parents or a Christmas tree figure from your grandma.

Day 18 Declutter the Living Room

The living room is often the heart of the home, so keeping it organized, and cozy is essential. Here is how you can tidy up and make it a welcoming, clutter-free space:

  1. Use the Four-Box Method:
Start by going through the living room with the four-box method: Put Away, Store Away, Throw Away, and Give Away.

  2. Tidy Up Toys:
If there are toys scattered around, move them to the kids' rooms or create a dedicated storage area for them in the living room. Consider a toy chest or baskets to keep toys organized and out of sight when not in use.

  3. Donate Decor You Do not Like:
Look around for decor pieces that no longer bring you joy or fit your space. If it is outdated, damaged, or you simply do not like it anymore, donate it to free up space and keep your living room feeling fresh.

  4. Organize Remotes:
Remotes can easily pile up in the living room. Find a solution, like a decorative tray, to keep them organized and within easy reach.

  5. Add Coasters to Keep Tables Neat:
Add coasters to your coffee and side tables to protect surfaces. You can find stylish coasters that complement your decor while adding functionality.

  6. Add Cozy Touches, Not Clutter:
To make your living room feel inviting, add cozy elements like throw blankets, decorative pillows, and a soft rug. Keep things neat by limiting the number of items and focusing on creating a comfortable, clutter-free, and beautiful space.

By using the four-box method and focusing on practical, stylish additions, your living room will become a peaceful, clutter-free zone for relaxation and gathering!

Day 19: Declutter the Gameroom (or Playroom)

The game room, or playroom, can be a fun and functional space for your family, but it can also easily become cluttered. Here is how to make it both attractive and practical:

Use the Four-Box Method:
Start with the four-box method: Put Away, Store Away, Throw Away, and Give Away. As you go through the room, decide what stays, what can be put away in a different space, and what needs to go.

  1. Pare Down Belongings:
Keep only the toys and games that your family genuinely enjoys and uses. If your kids have outgrown certain items or they are no longer played with, consider passing them on to someone else.

  2. Toss Broken Toys or Games with Missing Pieces:
Check for broken toys, games with missing pieces, or things that are no longer functional. Toss or recycle them to clear up space and make room for items that are still in good condition.

  3. Create Solutions for Storage:
Find practical storage solutions that fit the room's layout. Consider using cute bins, baskets, or shelves to organize toys, games, and books. Label containers to make it easy for kids to put things back where they belong.

  4. Make It Pretty and Functional:
Add decorative touches that still maintain functionality. For example, use stylish storage baskets, add fun wall art, or incorporate colorful rugs to bring personality into the room. This way, it is a space that looks good and works well for playtime.

By using the four-box method and finding practical storage solutions, you will create a game or toy room that is both beautiful and functional—ready for hours of fun and relaxation!

Day 20: Declutter the Backyard

Your backyard should be a relaxing and enjoyable outdoor space, but clutter can make it less inviting. Here is how to declutter your backyard using the four-box method and find storage solutions that are both attractive and functional:

  1. Use the Four-Box Method:
As with indoor spaces, start with the Four-Box Method: Put Away, Store Away, Throw Away, and Give Away. Walk through your backyard and decide what you really need, what can be stored more efficiently, and what should be tossed or donated.

  2. Pare Down Outdoor Games and Toys:
Check for any outdoor games, toys, or sports equipment. If something is broken or rarely used, toss it, or donate it. Keep only what your family uses and loves.

  3. Create Attractive and Comfortable Storage Solutions:
Invest in storage that blends with the outdoor setting. Consider using:

    • Outdoor Storage Benches: These are both functional and comfortable, providing seating while also hiding away outdoor games, pool toys, and cushions.

    • Deck Boxes: These are perfect for storing larger items like sports equipment, gardening tools, or cushions, and they come in assorted styles to match your backyard decor.

    • Storage Sheds: If you have the space, a small storage shed can keep all your outdoor items organized, safe, and out of sight.

  4. Add Decorative Touches:
Once the clutter is cleared, make the space inviting by adding plants, cozy seating, or string lights. Keep it simple but comfortable, with storage solutions that double as decor.

By using the four-box method and finding stylish, practical storage, you will have a clutter-free backyard that is as functional as it is beautiful—perfect for relaxing and enjoying time outdoors!

Day 21: Declutter the Front Porch

Your front porch is the first impression guests get of your home, so keeping it tidy, welcoming, and clutter-free is key. Here is how to create a beautiful, inviting space:

  1. Clear Away Clutter:
Start by removing any items that do not belong on the porch—old shoes, gardening tools, bags, or trash. Use the four-box method to decide what to keep, donate, or toss.

  2. Keep the Welcome Mat Fresh:
Make sure the doormat is clean and in good condition. A welcoming mat with a fun design or simple “Welcome” message sets the tone for a friendly entrance.

  3. Add Beautiful Plants:
Place potted plants or flowers around the porch to add color and life. Choose plants that are easy to maintain and fit with the overall aesthetic of your home. Consider hanging plants to maximize space.

  4. Check for Trash or Disrepair:
Keep the porch clear of trash or anything in disrepair. Ensure your porch furniture is in good condition.

  5. Add a Few Personal Touches:
A few decorative touches, like a throw pillow on a bench, a lantern, or a small table, can make your porch feel cozy and inviting without adding clutter.

By clearing away clutter, adding plants, and keeping the space tidy, your front porch will become a welcoming area that is both functional and beautiful for you and your guests.

Day 22: Declutter the Garage

The garage can easily become a catch-all for everything from cleaning supplies to sports equipment. Here is how to declutter your garage while organizing extra products and items:

  1. Use the Four-Box Method:
Start by using the Four-Box Method: Put Away, Store Away, Throw Away, and Give Away. As you go through the garage, decide which items to keep, donate, toss, or store more efficiently.

  2. Group Similar Items Together:
Group related items, such as towels, cleaning products, tools, car cleaning supplies, beach gear, and pool items. This will make it easier to see what you have, what you need, and what’s excess.

  3. Store Extra Towels and Cleaning Supplies:
For extra towels or cleaning products, consider adding clear plastic bins or labeled storage containers. You can stack them neatly in shelving units or cabinets. Keep your car cleaning items in one bin and your pool or beach items in another.

  4. Organize Tools and Equipment:
Use tool organizers, pegboards, or shelves to neatly store your tools. Label bins for smaller items, like screws, nails, and wrenches, to prevent them from getting lost.

  5. Storage Solutions for Seasonal Gear:
For beach or pool items, consider using large storage bins that you can slide under shelves or into corners. If you do not use certain items year-round, store them in labeled bins or clear boxes to keep them out of the way when not in use.

  6. Discard Items No Longer Needed:
Check for broken items, expired cleaners, or equipment that is beyond repair. Dispose of these things to make space for the items that are still in use.

By using the four-box method and adding thoughtful storage solutions, you can create an organized and clutter-free garage that makes accessing all your extra products easy and efficient.

Day 23: Declutter the Attic or Storage Building

The attic or storage building often ends up as a place for items that do not have a home in the rest of the house. It is important to keep this space organized and clutter free, so you can easily access what you need without wading through piles of clutter. Here is how to organize your attic or storage building:

  1. Use the Four-Box Method:
Begin with the Four-Box Method: Put Away, Store Away, Throw Away, and Give Away. Go through everything in the attic or storage building and sort it into boxes. This will help you see what you really need and what you can get rid of.

  2. Sort Items by Category:
Group related items together—holiday decorations, seasonal clothes, keepsakes, old furniture, sports equipment, and so on. This will help you know what you have and make it easier to store things in a more organized way.

  3. Store Items in Clear Bins:
For the items you want to keep, use clear plastic bins with lids. This will protect them from dust and moisture while also allowing you to easily see what is inside. Label the bins with their contents to make finding things easier in the future.

  4. Create Zones for Easy Access:
If possible, create zones for several types of items. For example, store seasonal items like holiday decorations in one area, keepsakes in another, and seasonal clothes or outdoor gear in a separate space.

  5. Consider Shelving and Hooks:
If you have the space, add shelves to keep boxes or smaller items organized. Hooks or pegboards can be great for hanging tools, sports equipment, or seasonal items like wreaths.

  6. Store Items You Use Less Frequently in the Back:
Items you do not need access to as often - in our case camping gear - can be stored in the back or on higher shelves. Keep items you use regularly or seasonally closer to the front for easy access.

  7. Purge Items You No Longer Need:
As you go through the attic or storage building, be ruthless about getting rid of items you no longer use, are broken, or that have been taking up space for years with no use. If you have not used it in over a year, it is time to let it go.

  8. Protect Items from Damage:
If you are storing delicate or valuable items, make sure they are properly protected in boxes, bubble wrap, or garment bags. Keep items off the ground, if possible, to avoid water damage.

By using the four-box method and organizing your storage building or attic, you will create a more functional and accessible space, making it easier to find what you need while keeping the clutter at bay.

Conclusion: A Clutter-Free, Functional Home Awaits You

Decluttering is not just about tidying up your space—it is about creating an environment that fosters peace, clarity, and joy. Whether you are tackling a single room, an entire house, or your main closet, the key is to approach the process step by step. By using the Four-Box Method, assessing each item, and being mindful of what you truly need or love, you can create a home that supports your lifestyle and brings you comfort.

The benefits of decluttering go far beyond just a neat space. It can reduce stress, boost your productivity, and allow you to enjoy the things that matter most. By letting go of excess and organizing your belongings in a thoughtful way, you will create more room—physically and mentally—for the things that truly serve you.

Remember, this process does not have to be done all at once. Set achievable goals, take your time, and celebrate your progress along the way. Keep up with small decluttering habits regularly to maintain a functional, clutter-free home. And when you finish one room, enjoy the sense of accomplishment before moving on to the next.

In the end, a well-organized, decluttered space will not only look better but feel better, helping you and your family enjoy the space you live in every single day. You have this—happy decluttering! And thank you for following along on our journey!

Supplies Needed

·       medium or large boxes

·       packing tape

·       trash bags

·       a permanent marker

·       Piece of paper (to begin a list on)

·       Packing paper

·       Four labels – put away, store away, give away, and throw away.

Review of the Four-Box Method

  • Put Away Box: For items that belong in another space. For instance, if you come across your daughter’s sneakers while going through the entry, they go in this box. She most likely has a designated spot for shoes in her room.

  • Throw Away Box: For trash or items with no further use, like candy wrappers or gas station receipts from 3 years ago.

  • Give Away Box: For things you no longer need or want but could be loved by someone else. That candle you will never burn - Perfect for this box. Your fourth set of dishes for your family of three would be great here, too.

  • Store Away Box: For sentimental or seasonal items, you want to keep but do not need out right now, such as a duplicate photo of your parents or a Christmas tree figure from your grandma.

Day 13: Declutter the Hallways

Hallways are often easy to tackle because they are typically fairly clutter-free spaces.

Declutter Floors

Start by checking the floor and surfaces. Is there anything that needs to be removed or relocated? Clear any clutter then make sure the space feels open and welcoming. Is there a runner in the hall that you have been meaning to replace? Maybe you don’t have one but think it would look nice. Go ahead and write that on your list for later.

Declutter Artwork

Next, take a good look at your artwork. Is there anything that does not fit with the vibe of your home or that no longer brings you joy? If something is “shouting” at you to get rid of it, do not hesitate—remove it! Your home should be filled with items that make you happy and create a peaceful atmosphere, not things that cause you stress or frustration.

Remember to use the four-box method: Put Away, Store Away, Throw Away, and Give Away.

Declutter any additional hallways you have. And remember to check them off your rooms’ list!

You are doing a fantastic job! Keep up the good work!

Day 14: Declutter the Home Office

The office can quickly become a cluttered space, but with a little effort, it can become a functional and inspiring place to work. Gather your four boxes and packing supplies and let’s get to work!

Declutter the Desk

Start by looking at the desk. Are there piles of paper, pens, or items you do not use often? Sort through everything using the four-box method: Put Away, Store Away, Throw Away, and Give Away. Then straighten it up, arranging it for beauty and function.

Declutter Shelves and Storage

Next, check your shelves and storage. Are there books, files, or supplies you do not need? If so, clear them out. Organize everything by category to make things easy to find.

Find a Filing System

Look at your filing system—are things organized, or are there loose papers everywhere? Consider setting up a simple filing system if you do not have one. More about this topic tomorrow!

Declutter Office Decor

Finally, check for any decor that might need to be updated or removed. Your office should be a space that feels both functional and motivating. Less is almost always more.

By the end of this decluttering session, your office will be organized, clutter-free, and ready for productive work!

You’re doing such a great job with all this decluttering business!

Day 15: Tackle Paper Clutter

Today is a different kind of challenge. It’s not a room we will declutter, but a category. Yesterday, you decluttered the office and you most likely encountered some paper that you need to manage. Let’s explore the following plan and see how much better organized our paper clutter becomes.

The Plan for Paper Clutter

Paper clutter can quickly take over your office and home, but today we will take control! Here is how to start:

  1. Gather it all: Collect all the paper piles around your home or office, from mail to notes to receipts. Bring everything to one place so you can deal with it all at once.

  2. Sort into categories: Divide the paper into categories like "To File," "To Action," "To Shred," and "To Recycle." This helps you see what is important and what you can discard.

  3. File or shred: Start filing important papers you want to keep and shred anything you do not need. If you do not have a filing system, now is a wonderful time to set one up! Simple file folders labeled by categories (like “Taxes,” “Medical,” “Receipts”) will keep things organized.

  4. Tackle the “To Action” pile: For anything that needs your attention (bills, forms, etc.), manage it right away—pay bills, respond to requests, or file forms. If it is something you cannot deal with immediately, set a time to complete it later.

  5. Go digital: For paper you want to keep but do not need to store physically, consider scanning and saving it digitally. There are apps that can help with this!

By the end of the day, you will have a cleaner space with a much more organized paper trail!

Prevent Paper Clutter from Piling Up

*NOTE* One of the best ways to prevent paper clutter from piling up is to deal with it as soon as it enters your home. Here is how:

  1. Mail: As soon as you grab the mail, sort it immediately into categories—trash, recycle, action, or file. Recycle junk mail right away, file important documents, and act on bills or letters that need your attention.

  2. Receipts: Keep receipts for a brief time and then either scan and store them digitally or toss them if they are not needed. Use a small folder or envelope to store receipts temporarily until you can manage them.

  3. Gifts & Cards: After receiving a gift, immediately remove any packaging, read cards, and store the gift in its proper place. If you want to keep the card, consider storing it in a memory box or displaying it for a while.

By handling paper clutter as it comes in, you will prevent it from piling up and creating stress down the road. Stay on top of it, and your space will stay organized!

Be sure to check “office” on your list because you are finished! You’re moving closer to the ultimate finish line, too.

Day 16: Bookshelf Decluttering

Bookshelves can easily become cluttered with books, decor, and random items, but with a few simple tips, you can transform them into organized, visually appealing spaces. Gather your decluttering supplies, including your boxes, and let’s tackle the bookshelves.

How-To Declutter Your Bookshelves

  1. Sort Your Books:
Start by going through your books and ask yourself: Do I still read this? Do I love it? Do I want to read it again? If not, consider donating books you no longer need or want. Keep only the books that hold value to you.

  2. Categorize Your Books:
Organize your books by genre, author, or color to create a clean and structured look. You could also organize by size if you prefer a more uniform appearance.

  3. Incorporate Decorative Items:
Do not just stack books! Add some decorative items like plants, candles, or unique sculptures. These can break up the rows of books and give your bookshelf a more curated feel.

  4. Limit Clutter:
Be mindful of other items on your bookshelf. It is easy to let other clutter creep in but try to limit it to only what you truly need or enjoy. Use storage baskets or bins on the lower shelves to hide items you do not need access to daily.

  5. Maximize Vertical Space:
If you have a tall bookshelf, make the most of your vertical space by arranging books both horizontally and vertically. Stacking books horizontally can help break up rows and create visual interest.

  6. Consider Bookends:
Bookends are not just functional—they can also add style. Choose a pair that complements your decor to keep your books upright and tidy.

By following these tips, along with the four-box process, your bookshelves will look neat, organized, and reflect your personal style!

Be sure to check “office” on your list if you didn’t yesterday! Getting closer to the finish line. Woohoo!

Day 17: Tackle the Dining Room (or Eat-In Kitchen)

The dining room should be a place for family gatherings, meals, and celebrations, so keeping it neat and inviting is key!

Start with Surfaces

Grab your four boxes and supplies and get to work! Start with surfaces, asking yourself, “Is this beautiful or useful?” If it’s not, you know what to do. Find the right box - Store Away, Put Away, Throw Away, or Give Away - and throw it in. You know the routine by now and you can do it in your sleep!

Declutter the China cabinet

Next declutter the China cabinet or display case. Look at décor, as well. Does it still fit your style? Maybe you need to add something? Ask yourself all these questions and jot notes down on your list, if needed.

Tips to Keep the Dining Room Clutter-Free

Here is how you can keep the space organized and stylish:

  1. Keep the Table Clean and Decorated:
Regularly clear off the dining table to avoid it becoming a clutter magnet. Keep a simple centerpiece—like fresh flowers, a decorative bowl, or a stylish tray—to add beauty without overcrowding.

  2. Check for Ugly or Outdated Decor:
Look at the decor in your dining room. Is there anything that no longer fits with your style or feels outdated? If so, consider swapping the old decor for something fresh and modern.

  3. Add Storage for Placemats, Tablecloths, Dishes, and More:
Make sure you have a designated storage spot for your dining essentials. Consider a sideboard or cabinet for storing placemats, tablecloths, napkins, and dishes. This keeps everything organized and easily accessible when you need it.

  4. Organize the Buffet or Cabinet:
Use shelves or baskets inside storage units to keep items like candles, extra serving utensils, or serving dishes organized. Labeling boxes or drawers can help you quickly locate what you need.

By keeping your dining room table clean, updating decor, and adding practical storage, you will create a space that is both functional and beautiful!

When you finish the eat in kitchen or dining room, add a check to your rooms’ list!

Conclusion:

We have done a lot of really good work this week. Take this weekend to catch up if you need to. I hope you are seeing tons of progress and feel encouraged by it! Keep it up! Can’t wait to see you next week when we FINISH our decluttering challenge!

Day 8: Tackle the Kids’ Bedrooms

Let us move on to the kids' bedrooms now!

Declutter the Bedroom Surfaces

Start by scanning the whole room to find any items out of place. Sort them into the four boxes: Put Away, Store Away, Throw Away, and Give Away.

Then, look at the surfaces in the room. Are they clear except for things that make the space functional and adorable? If not, take a moment to clear the clutter and keep only the items that belong to create a pleasant environment.

Declutter Bedroom Drawers Cabinets, and Bookshelves

Next, open the drawers and go through each item in every drawer. Ask yourself, "Is it beautiful or useful?" Also, consider how many of each item you really need—kids often have more toys, clothes, or items than they can use.

Get your child involved, too. They may have some toys or clothes they favor and be fine if you donate some of the others.

Bedroom Decluttering Tips:

  • Kids like a calm, tidy space, too.

  • You may need to help your child keep his room tidy when he is young by guiding or helping him.

  • Having fewer toys and clothes makes it easier for your child to keep a tidy room.

  • Parents often feel more is better when it comes to kids. But many kids like fewer decorations and a visually pleasing space.

  • If your child has too many toys or belongings, consider donating or putting some in the closet to rotate with their favorites to keep play interesting.

  • Be respectful of what your child wants to keep and help find a storage solution for each item.

By the end of your time decluttering kids’ rooms, you will have a tidy, organized space that both you and your kids will love!

Keep up the good decluttering work!

Day 9: Declutter the Main Closet

We’re backing up a bit today. We’ve decluttered bedrooms but not closets. So, let’s revisit the main bedroom and focus on that packed, disorganized closet that you may or may not have. Wink, wink.

Decluttering your main closet can create a calming, organized space and make getting dressed in the morning easier and more enjoyable.

Here is how to declutter and organize your closet effectively:

1. Empty the Closet

Begin by taking everything out of your closet. This includes clothes, shoes, accessories, and anything else that has accumulated in there. It is easier to sort through items when you can see everything in front of you.

2. Use the Four-Box Method

Sort your items into the Four-Box Method:

  • Put Away: Items that belong elsewhere in your home.

  • Store Away: Seasonal items that you do not need access to right now.

  • Throw Away: Items that are worn out, damaged, or beyond repair.

  • Give Away: Clothes that no longer fit, you do not wear or are no longer your style.

3. Assess Each Item

As you go through each piece, ask yourself:

  • Does it fit?

  • Is it in good condition?

  • Do I wear it regularly?

  • Does it bring me joy or serve a purpose?
If the answer is no, it is time to let it go. Be honest with yourself.

  • I find it helpful to ask, “What pieces do I love?” when sorting clothes. That’s an easier brain process for me than, “Should I get rid of this?”

4. Limit "Sentimental" Items

Sentimental items can take up a lot of space. Keep only those that are truly meaningful. Consider taking photos of items that are hard to part with if you feel emotionally attached. Consider moving the items you keep to the attic or storage.

5. Sort by Category

Group related items together—clothes, shoes, accessories, scarves, bags, etc. This makes it easier to see what you have and identify if you do not wear it anymore.

6. Tackle Shoes and Accessories

Shoes often take up a lot of space. Go through your collection and keep only those you wear frequently or that serve a purpose. Similarly, go through your accessories (scarves, jewelry, bags) and donate anything you do not use or love.

7. Organize by Frequency of Use

Once you have pared down your clothing, organize your closet in a way that makes sense for how often you wear items. For example, keep frequently worn clothes at eye level and store seasonal or less-used items higher up or in storage bins.

8. Use Storage Solutions

Invest in closet organizers, such as:

  • Hangers: Uniform hangers can help maximize space and keep your clothes looking neat.

  • Drawer Dividers: Perfect for organizing smaller items like scarves, belts, and jewelry.

  • Clear Bins: For seasonal clothing or accessories that you use less frequently.

  • Shelf Organizers: For shoes, bags, or folded items.

9. Optimize Vertical Space

Use the space on your closet walls for additional storage, like hooks for bags or jewelry, or shelves for shoes or accessories. If you have a lot of hanging clothes, consider adding a second rod for shorter items, like shirts and skirts.

10. Keep Only What Fits

Make sure everything you keep fits well and is in good condition. If something does not fit properly, it is time to part with it or get it altered.

11. Maintain Regularly

Once your closet is decluttered and organized, it is important to maintain it. Take 5-10 minutes at the end of each season to go through your closet and remove items that you no longer need. Keeping up with small decluttering tasks will prevent things from piling up again.

12. Reward Yourself

After you have successfully decluttered your closet, take a moment to appreciate the fresh space you have created. Enjoy how much easier it is to find what you need and how peaceful your closet now feels!

By following these steps, you can transform your main closet into an organized, functional, and clutter-free space.

I bet you have filled many boxes so far! Doesn’t that feel good?

Day 10: Declutter the Other Closets

Other closets, such as kids’, entry, and linen closets are next on the decluttering list.

You’re warmed up from cleaning out the main closet yesterday, so, let’s go ahead and finish all of them. Using the guidelines from Day 9 and the Four-Box Method, begin a productive day of sorting and cleaning all the closets in your home. Your future self will thank you when you go to find that, say, baseball glove, and it’s in just the right spot.

When you finish the closets, dig out that room list and check off “Closets.” We are almost halfway finished with this 23 Day Challenge. You are doing a great job decluttering! Are you felling accomplished? I hope so!

Day 11: Love Your Laundry Room

Declutter Shelves and Cupboards

Let us move to the laundry room! With your four boxes and supplies in hand, start by checking the shelves and cupboards. Are they organized, or do they have items that do not belong? Sort through everything using the four-box method: Put Away, Store Away, Throw Away, and Give Away.

Clear Off Washer and Dryer

Next, look at the washer and dryer. Are they clear of clutter? Make sure the area around the machines is tidy.

Clear Floor

Do not forget the floor. Has the rug seen better days? If so, throw it in either the give away or throw away box. Your choice.

Other Tips for the Laundry Room

  • While you are working, think about whether there is something you might need in this space, like a small trash can for lint or more laundry baskets. If so, add it to your list.

  • Consider using cute containers for laundry soap and storage.

  • Make sure as much as possible is stored off the floor for easy cleaning.

By the end of this, your laundry room will be much more functional and organized!

Remember, now is not the time to deep clean or seriously decorate. We are mainly focusing on getting rid of items that no longer feel useful or you don’t love.

Congratulations! You have finished another area in your home! Check it off the list. Are you beginning to feel lighter?

Day 12: Declutter the Entryway

What a productive week it has been so far! Let’s continue the productivity.

The entryway is the first impression of your home, so it is important that it is decluttered, functional, and welcoming. Start by making sure the space sets a positive tone for the rest of your home.

Remember to use the four-box method while decluttering: Put Away, Store Away, Throw Away, and Give Away.

Check for clutter—shoes, coats, bags, or anything that does not belong in the entryway – and deal with the items. Consider adding a container or storage solution for shoes to keep them organized. A bowl for keys is also a great idea, as it helps keep them in one place and prevents them from being misplaced.

Take a moment to tidy up the surfaces and make sure everything you see adds to the functionality and beauty of the space. A clean, organized entryway makes your home feel more inviting and sets the tone for the rest of the house!

Get out your checklist and give “entryway” a check for completion!

What a successful week we’ve had! You are more than halfway finished decluttering your home. I know it’s been a challenge, and you have taken on that challenge with vigor! Use the coming weekend to catch up or rest - whichever you like! See you next week! And thank you for following along on this journey!

Day 3: Cut Kitchen Clutter: Counters and Under the Sink

Declutter Your Kitchen Counters

When you look at your kitchen, you want to see clear counters, beauty, and no visual clutter. Today, we are going to make that happen! Excited? I am!

Start in one corner of your kitchen, on the counters, look at each item, and ask yourself, “Is this item useful or beautiful?” If the answer is no, place it in one of the four boxes: Put Away, Store Away, Throw Away, & Give Away.

Continue this process for the all counters in the kitchen. You may even find you don’t want your, say, toaster out anymore. You only use it once a week. Clear a spot in the pantry for it and move it there. Todah! The counters are already looking better!

Declutter Under the Sink

Sit down in front of the under-sink cabinets and ask yourself the big question: “Is this useful or beautiful?” While you might not find anything beautiful here, you will definitely find useful items. Sort through duplicates or things you no longer need, and sort them into your boxes - “Put Away,” “Store Away,” “Throw Away,” and “Give Away.” Put away all the needed items in an organized fashion. Note on your list anything that may be helpful under the sink - a shelf, hook, or lazy Susan to help you organize an easily access things.

Now that you have decluttered, take some time to straighten up the counters and under the sink, making sure everything works for you. You might want to add a little décor to the counter, like a pretty plant, or something super practical, like a cutting board or a fruit bowl.

For under the sink, arrange your most-used items at the front and less frequently used items at the back. Note on your list if you see anything that may be helpful under the sink - a shelf, hook, or lazy Susan to help you organize and easily access things. A lazy Susan can work wonders here, giving you easy access to everything with a simple spin. It is a perfect solution for those tricky spaces under the sink!

Wonderful job! Your kitchen is already looking more organized and functional! Did you fill a box? If so, seal it up and label it. Or you can move your trash to a trash bag (depending on your city’s rules) or recycle bin. Feeling a little lighter? I am. :)

Here’s the AFTER in my kitchen. I left a few decorative items, moved the fruit bowl to the right counter (not seen), and put the flour and sugar in the pantry instead of leaving it on the counter in canisters. Now I have a workstation on my island! Horray!

Day 4: Cut Kitchen Clutter: Cabinets and Drawers

Today, we are continuing with kitchen cabinets and drawers. Remember how great your under-sink cabinet looks and feels after decluttering? Let us carry that momentum into the rest of the kitchen!

Declutter the Kitchen Cabinets

Using the four-box method, open the first cabinet and ask yourself the key question: “Is it beautiful or useful?” If the answer is yes, keep it! If not, sort it into one of the four boxes: Put Away, Store Away, Throw Away, or Give Away.

Go through each cabinet until finished.

Declutter the Kitchen Drawers

Once you have completed the cabinets, move on to the drawers and repeat the process. Keep going until everything is sorted and organized.

You are creating a kitchen that works better and feels amazing.

As you work through your kitchen, you might come across items that need replacing—like a muffin pan that is rusted and no longer useful. Go ahead and add "muffin pan" to your list of things to replace. This way, you will not forget to buy a new one!

Also, think about your busiest cooking days, like Thanksgiving or Christmas. How many of each type of dish do you actually need for those events? Anything beyond is classified as excess. Keeping only what you need will make your kitchen more organized and functional.

Keep up the good work, my friend!

Day 5: Cut Kitchen Clutter: Pantry and Refrigerator

Now that your counters, cabinets, and drawers are looking great and feeling functional, it is time to focus on the pantry and fridge!

Declutter the Pantry

Grab a step ladder and start at the top of the pantry. Use the Four Box Method to sort things as you go. As you work your way down the pantry, look for expired food, items your family does not eat, and any random non-pantry items that somehow end up there.

Group similar foods together then add to a list of anything you need to replace or stock up on. But don’t make a complete grocery list. You can do that at another time. We don’t want to get off track.

Keep going—you are making excellent progress!

Declutter the Freezer

Now, let us move on to the fridge and freezer! Start with the freezer: Toss anything that is past its optimal date and get rid of open packages with freezer burn. Then, organize the items by category.

Declutter the Fridge

Next, head to the refrigerator. Begin with the doors—check expiration dates and toss anything that is expired. If you find things to replace, add them to your grocery list. Continue with the rest of the fridge.

Congratulations! The hardest room—the kitchen—is officially decluttered. Now, grab your list of rooms from Day 1 and put a big, satisfying check next to “kitchen.” You have completed your first room! Fantastic job!

Day 6: Better Those Bathrooms

Now, let us move on to the second most useful room: the bathroom! Don’t worry! We will take decluttering step-by-step and use our trusted system.

Declutter Bathroom Countertops

Start by taking a quick look at your bathroom counters and around the tub. How cluttered are they? Are there items on the counter or by the tub that are not beautiful or useful? If so, it is time to put them away or get rid of them!

Arrange your countertop so it looks neat and simple. (And easy to clean.) Display only what is necessary, like hand soap, a small vase with flowers, and a set of fresh hand towels. That is all that needs to be on your counter. A clean, organized space will make your bathroom feel fresh and inviting!

Declutter Your Bathroom Cabinets and Drawers

Grab your four labeled boxes and supplies and start opening the cabinets! As you go through each item, ask yourself the key decluttering question: “Is this useful or beautiful?” Sort any unneeded items into the four boxes: Put Away, Store Away, Throw Away, and Give Away. Keep going until all the items are sorted. Put all your needed products back in an organized manner. Your cabinets will be clutter-free and organized for you to enjoy!

Decluttering the Bathroom Tips:

  • Discard any expired makeup or products. It is important to keep your beauty products fresh and safe to use.

  • Discard broken items.

  • Keep only about three sets of towels per person. This helps reduce excess and keeps your linen closet neat and manageable.

  • Sort and store extras: toothpaste, soap, shampoo, etc. I like to use clear, plastic shoe boxes for this.

  • Consider adding a lazy Susan to your list to access products under your sinks. They make organization really easy!

  • Discard expired medicines

If you think of any products that will help keep your cabinets in tip top shape, write them on your list to purchase at a later date.

These small moves can make an enormous difference in keeping your bathroom organized and functional!

Declutter Additional Bathrooms

Repeat this process with all the bathrooms in your home and do not forget to give “bathrooms” a nice, big check on your list to see your progress!

Keep up the great work!

Day 7: Boost Your Main Bedroom to New Heights

Declutter the Main Bedroom

Now, let us move on to the main bedroom! Start by scanning the entire room to spot any items that are out of place. Begin sorting them into the four boxes: Put Away, Store Away, Throw Away, and Give Away.

Next, focus on your surfaces. Are they clear except for items that make the room look and feel functional and beautiful? If not, take a few moments to clear away any clutter and arrange only the essentials and decorative pieces that enhance the space.

Remember less is more when it comes to Knick knacks.

Declutter Main Bedroom Drawers and Cabinets

Then open your drawers and cabinets. For each item in them, ask yourself the decluttering question: "Is it beautiful or useful?" Remember to also consider how many of that particular item you need. Do you need 20 t-shirts or 10? This will help you streamline your space and create calm, organized drawers.

Bedroom Declutter Tips:

  • Make sure your most used items are easily accessed.

  • Store one extra set of sheets in the bedroom. Put them in a drawer or closet. More than one set of sheets per bed is not really needed unless there are certain circumstances such as a sick or potty-training child.

  • If you have a chair that collects clothes and clutter, consider getting rid of it or clearing it off and making a goal to keep it clear so you can actually SIT on it.

  • Your bedroom should make you feel calm and relaxed. A Decluttered space can help!

  • Do you like the décor in your room? If so, awesome! If not, use the four-box method to relocate some of it.

  • Really think about your clothes. Consider DONATING clothes in your drawers that:

    • Don’t fit.

    • Are uncomfortable.

    • You don’t feel your best in.

    • Have seen better days (pilling, holes, etc.).

    • You have too many of. Example How many pairs of leggings do you need? Probably not more than four since you have a washer and dryer and other pants and skirts. 😊

    • You don’t have room for.

    • Are a different style than you like.

Now you can place another check on your list: Main Bedroom! Congratulations. I look forward to next week when we tackle even more clutter and transform our homes into a more functional haven!

Declutter Your Home in 23 Days {Days 0-2}

Introduction - Decluttering Is Doable

Decluttering means letting go of things in your home that you and your family do not need anymore. It is that painting by Aunt Wanda you have had for 10 years but never really liked. Or the bin of broken crayons in the playroom that no one uses. Or the three sets of dishes in the cabinets, but your table only seats twelve people at most.

You do not need to hold onto things that bring guilt or use extra space! Donate that painting to someone who will enjoy it, throw away the broken crayons, and give away a couple of those dish sets. You will feel lighter, both in your home and in your mind!

Decluttering your whole house might feel like a huge job, but don’t worry—you can break it into small, simple steps. That way, it will not feel stressful or take up too much time.

When your home is tidy and filled with only useful, beautiful things, you will feel happier and more relaxed. I promise you! You might even find it easier to get ready in the morning or cook a meal. Plus, your whole family will love how peaceful and organized your space feels. Try it and enjoy the freedom decluttering brings!

Day 1: Prepare for the Decluttering Challenge

Straighten and Clean

Before starting your decluttering journey, take a moment to do a light cleaning and tidying up in your home. Clearing away surface messes and giving your space a quick refresh will help you see everything more clearly and set the stage for effective decluttering.

List Rooms in Your Space

Start your decluttering journey by making a list of all the rooms and areas in your home. Do not forget spots like closets, hallways, and other small spaces! Having a clear list will keep you organized and help you track your progress as you check off each area you have completed. It is a wonderful way to stay motivated and on track

Gather Your Supplies

Here is what you will need:

Print Labels

Print four labels: Store Away, Put Away, Throw Away, and Give Away. Attach a label to each of four boxes so you are ready to sort items as you go.

With your plan and supplies ready to go, you are all set to declutter. Take it one room at a time, and watch your home transform into a cleaner, more organized space. You’ve got this!

Day 2: Devise a Strategy to Declutter: The Four-Box Method

How To Use the Four-Box Method

Before you dive into decluttering, let’s establish simple rules. For each item you own, ask yourself: Is it useful or beautiful? If the answer is no, place it into one of your labeled boxes. Here is how the four-box method works:

  • Put Away Box: For items that belong in another space. For instance, if you come across your daughter’s sneakers while going through the entry, they go in this box. She most likely has a designated spot for shoes in her room.

  • Throw Away Box: For trash or items with no further use, like candy wrappers or gas station receipts form 3 years ago.

  • Give Away Box: For things you no longer need or want but could be useful or loved by someone else. That candle you will never burn -  Perfect for this box. The fourth set of dishes would be great here, too.

  • Store Away Box: For sentimental or seasonal items, you want to keep but do not need out right now, such as a cherished photo of your parents or a Christmas tree figure from your grandma.

As your "Put Away" box fills up, take a moment to put those items in their proper places around the house. This can be a fantastic way to take a quick break from sorting—a change of scenery! Once you have put everything away, jump right back into your decluttering task. Don’t get distracted.

When any of the other three boxes (Throw Away, Give Away, or Store Away) become full, seal them with tape, label them if needed, and take them to their final destination—trash, donation, or attic. Of course, you’re not going to drive to the donation station with one box. But go ahead and place it in your trunk – one step closer to donating and getting unneeded items out of the house!

Once that is done, return to the room you are working in, grab fresh boxes to replace the sealed ones, add labels, and keep sorting.

By sticking to this system, you will quickly make progress and create a more organized, intentional space. Keep it up—you are doing awesome!

Here are some helpful tips for decluttering your home effectively:

  1. Start Small:
Begin with a small space or specific area, such as a single drawer or a countertop. Breaking the task into smaller chunks makes it less overwhelming.

  2. Use the Four-Box Method:
As you go through each space, use the Four-Box Method: Put Away, Store Away, Throw Away, and Give Away. This helps you quickly make decisions on what to keep, store, toss, or donate.

  3. Set a Time Limit:
Set a timer for 20-30 minutes. This prevents you from feeling bogged down by the process and makes it easier to focus for a short amount of time.

  4. Use Clear Bins for Storage:
For the items you want to keep, use clear bins or storage containers. Label them so you can easily identify what's inside, and stack them neatly for easy access.

  5. Let Go of Duplicates:
If you have multiple versions of the same item (three sets of towels, five muffin pans), consider keeping only the best ones or the number you actually need.

  6. Ask the Tough Questions:
For each item, ask yourself: Is it useful? Is it beautiful? Will I use it in the next year? If it does not meet these criteria, it is time to let it go.

  7. Purge Sentimental Items with Care:
Sentimental items can be tough to part with. Consider keeping only the items that hold meaning and either donate, sell, or repurpose the rest.

  8. Declutter as You Go:
Handle paper, clothes, and items as soon as they come into your home to avoid clutter buildup. Deal with mail, packages, and other items promptly instead of letting them pile up.

  9. Stay Organized After Decluttering:
Once you have decluttered, keep your home organized by regularly reassessing and tidying up. Make it a habit to declutter a little each month to prevent future buildup.

  10. Set Goals and Celebrate:
Give yourself a goal to achieve, such as decluttering one room or space a day, and celebrate your progress! Reward yourself after reaching a milestone to stay motivated.

  11. Be Kind to Yourself:

Give yourself time. Decluttering is physically tiring and emotional. If you need to add days to the challenge, do it! We are aiming for progress, not perfection!

By following these tips, you can tackle decluttering with confidence and create a more organized, functional, and peaceful home. Congratulations! You are ready to begin decluttering! We’ll start on Monday!

How to Budget for a Whole Room Refresh: A Complete Guide to Smart Spending

Introduction

Staged for Living’s Whole Room Refresh is a popular choice for busy professionals who want a complete room makeover. We handle everything from planning to installing the final look, so our busy clients can relax and enjoy their new space.

But what if you want to decorate the room yourself? Maybe you have the time, the ideas, and the know-how to make it happen. This guide will walk you through organizing your budget, so you can create a beautiful, refreshed room without overspending. Let’s get started!

Start with Your Decorating Vision:

Set Priorities and Goals

Before starting your room refresh, think about what you want from the new space. Do you want a cozy and relaxing room? Or maybe a fun and colorful space that makes you feel excited?

Try making a mood board. This could be a digital board on Pinterest or even a collage on poster board. Add pictures of colors, furniture, or decorations you love. Seeing all your ideas together will help you picture how the room will look and decide where to spend your budget.

Begin Space Planning and Designing

Here’s a step-by-step guide to plan out your room redesign:

  1. Sketch a Floor Plan: Measure your room and sketch a simple layout to explore different furniture arrangements. Note the locations of doors, windows, and outlets to plan around these features.

  2. Color Scheme: Choose a color palette that complements your existing items and adds a fresh look. Find 2-3 primary colors and an accent hue, creating a balance of light, dark, and bold tones.

  3. Curtain Length: Measure from the floor to your curtain rod location (optimally close to the ceiling and 8 inches wider than the window) to get an ideal curtain length. Curtains often look best when they slightly “kiss” the floor.

  4. Walls & Molding: Decide if you want to paint or wallpaper. Consider adding decorative molding or paneling to enhance architectural interest, especially if you want a classic or elegant look.

  5. Furniture Choices: Think about upholstered pieces like sofas, chairs, or ottomans for comfort and softness. For non-upholstered options, consider tables, shelving units, or benches to add structure.

  6. Accent Fabrics: Select fabrics for rugs, pillows, and curtains that work well with your color scheme.

  7. Accessories: Choose wall art, mirrors, and tabletop decor that reflect your personality and add charm.

  8. Plants: Add a couple of plants for a fresh, organic element. Choose types that fit the lighting conditions of your space or consider low-maintenance options if needed.

  9. Lighting: Assess your lighting needs. Think about chandeliers for general lighting and table or floor lamps for cozy, task-specific light.

What to Expect When Choosing a Whole Room Refresh

So, picture this: You've got this space that's screaming for a makeover. But you're stuck in a decorating rut, unsure where to start. Enter Staged for Living.

First Step: Questionnaire

LJ answered the ringing phone, greeted by a client, Mrs. K, on the other end seeking to revamp her son's bedroom as he transitioned into his teenage years. LJ, with enthusiasm and after a short chat, quickly sent her a comprehensive 20-question questionnaire via email. The questionnaire delved into the client’s budget, her son's preferences, desired timeline, and other details essential for crafting the perfect redesign. Once Mrs. K filled out and sent back the questionnaire, LJ was set to hop on a discovery call. They scheduled it for the next day. The purpose was to talk further about the project ahead and make sure they were on the same page.

Up Next: Discovery Call & Process Guide

Before diving into the discovery call, LJ made sure Mrs. K was well-informed by sending an informational packet. This packet outlined the Staged for Living decorating process with LJ as the decorator, provided details about pricing, and addressed frequently asked questions to ensure Mrs. K had all the necessary information upfront.

During the discovery call, LJ and Mrs. K got to know each other and the project better. LJ gathered as much information as possible so she could nail the design. They also scheduled the in-person Design Consultation for two days later.

Essential Step: Design Consultation

Two days later, Mrs. K warmly welcomed LJ into her home. LJ arrived prepared, lugging her tools and tote bag with her. Mrs. K led LJ to her son's room, where LJ immediately got to work. She measured, took photos, and made notes, ready to kickstart the transformation process. Before leaving, LJ peeked inside the son's closet to gain insight into his fashion preferences, understanding that this could offer clues for designing his room.

Design Details: Canva Project, Floorplan Design, & Furniture Layout

Back at home, LJ created a Canva project with all the new info she gathered. Armed with the measurements, she also dove into creating a room floorplan. LJ got down to business, placing the desired furniture pieces on the floorplan to figure out the best arrangement. She wanted to ensure everything fit just right for Mrs. K's son's new room.

More Design Details: Decor, Estimates, & Timelines

In addition, LJ started listing out all the essentials on a spreadsheet. From large furniture items to accent fabrics, accessories, plants, and lighting, she curated a comprehensive list to ensure every detail was accounted for in Mrs. K's son's bedroom redesign. LJ proceeded to estimate the cost of each piece and the overall project timeline. This detailed breakdown would provide Mrs. K with a clear understanding of expected expenses, ensuring transparency throughout the process.

With Mrs. K's son's preferences and the room's design in mind, LJ curated on Canva a collection of furniture and accessories that would not only complement the aesthetic but also create a user-friendly and personalized space reflective of his style.

Next Up: Wall Sketches, Design & Budget Approval

After selecting furniture and accessories, LJ proceeded to create wall sketches to present to Mrs. K for approval. These Canva sketches would provide a visual of the layout and design, allowing Mrs. K to provide feedback and make any necessary adjustments before the implementation phase.

The next day, with delight, LJ received Mrs. K's enthusiastic approval of the design and budget. With everything in place, LJ was ready to bring the vision to life and transform Mrs. K's son's bedroom into a space that perfectly captured his personality and style.

The Second-Best Part: Shopping for Furniture and Accessories

With excitement fueling her, LJ eagerly embarked on her favorite part of the process: shopping. Armed with her carefully curated list and design vision, LJ set out to find the perfect furniture, accessories, and decor items to bring the project to fruition.

After every item was thoughtfully gathered, right down to the lightbulbs, the much-anticipated Install Day finally arrived (almost two weeks later)! It was a moment of excitement for everyone involved!

It All Comes Together: Install Day

On Install Day, LJ wasted no time diving into action. She assembled furniture, hung curtains and art pieces, and placed carefully selected accessories throughout the room. With an eye for detail, LJ kept a list close by to note any additional tasks that needed attention later, ensuring that every aspect of the project was addressed.

The Very Best Part: Happy Clients

As the final touches were put in place and the room came together beautifully, Mrs. K, her son, and LJ couldn't contain their happiness. The finished product exceeded their expectations, leaving them delighted with the transformation. It was a true testament to LJ's dedication, resulting in a space that reflected the son's personality and style so well.

Are You Suited for Interior Decorating?

Unique life stories are not unique. Everyone has one. The following won’t be my whole life story, just a small part of it. You’re welcome. :) As I look back on life, I know God used parts of my childhood to pave the way for me to have a career in interior decorating.

Creativity Consumes You.

As a child, I enjoyed many activities:  dance, skiing, swimming, school, reading, playing, visiting, skating, and creating. Thankfully, my parents gave me ample opportunity to do these things regularly. Slowly, throughout my life, my pastimes involved more and more creativity.

You are Organized and Tidy.

I also loved organizing. Different, I know. My toys were normally neat and tidy. My room was the same. I used small boxes to separate the recesses of my drawers, so my little trinkets didn’t get mixed up with each other and I could find things I needed. My closet was usually organized with clothes carefully hung, shoes neatly lined up, and toys thoughtfully put away.

Crafting is Your Thing

At an early age, probably eight years old or so, my oldest sister, Geri, taught me to sew. We went to the fabric store, picked out a pattern, fabric, and all the notions, and she taught me to make an outfit. It was a Hawaiian tank top with matching shorts that tied. I can still imagine the navy background and bright floral material. I’m pretty sure she taught me to crochet, too. And my dad, of all people, made detailed scrapbooks which I imitated as I began to make my own. I was around a lot of creativity and beauty in my childhood.

You Love Houses and Decor.

The first house I really loved was our house in Houston. We moved there in 1979. It was a 3,000 square foot English traditional two-story built in 1978. It had beautiful crystal chandeliers in the foyer and dining rooms as you entered the front door. The living room had a tall cathedral ceiling with 2-story windows which always made us a little nervous when a hurricane blew through Houston. The banister was made of beautiful wood, and there was a gorgeous stone fireplace and hearth.  My mom decorated our home minimalisticly with classic, tasteful décor that she didn’t change out often at all.  Our house was kept clean and straightened, and it was comfortable. It was home.

You Decorated Your Own Space as a Child.

My room was upstairs beside Merrie’s, my sister two years older than I. I had dark wood, mid-century modern furniture which my mom bought at a garage sale down the street. I did not like that furniture at all. Why couldn’t I have the cute, white wicker furniture Merrie had? Since that wasn’t going to happen, I decided to paint my brown bed, dressers, and nightstand. As a young girl, what color paint do you think I picked? Yep! You guessed it! Pink. Not only pink, but Pepto Bismol pink. My parents must have been good sports! I now know that pink was not any better than dark brown wood, but at the time, I was happy with my project.

You Enjoy Planning and Executing Projects.

Years passed and it was time to prepare for college. Texas Tech University. My future roommate and I made a list of all the dorm essentials we’d need and split it up. We also decided to buy matching twin comforters, so our tiny dorm room looked a little cohesive.

You Love Color and Comfy Decor.

Our dorm room wasn’t the cutest on the floor, but it was pretty cute. Peach and other light colors filled our room with warmth. We had matching shams. Comfy throw pillows along with cozy throw blankets were thrown on the bed. We decorated our bulletin boards with peaches and creams to coordinate with the comforters. And added a rug and curtains. And a fridge. Every dorm room needs a fridge. Our shared dorm room became the hangout and I remember wondering if the colors we chose had anything to do with that.

Who knew that my creativity and love for beauty as a child would later draw me to interior decorating? Who knew that God was building a desire in me for creating calm, inviting interiors?   At that time in my life, I had no idea.

Contact me for services. I’d love to work with you on a project!

What Responsibilities Do Interior Decorators Have?

Interior decorators study design and trends, meet with clients, estimate costs, write budgets, and plan clients’ spaces for functionality and coziness. (If you want to read more about that, check out my blog post entitled What do Interior Decorators Do?) As if this wasn’t enough, there are many more actions that we perform each day! What are they? Glad you asked!

Interior Decorators Create Original Designs.

Interior Decorators also create sample designs for clients so we can collaborate with them before actually doing any heavy lifting.  We create virtual mood boards with carefully placed furniture and accessories we think clients may like. As we narrow choices, decorators select specific furniture and accessory pieces then draw designs of the room with these elements. That way, our clients can “see” the room before anything is purchased.

Interior Decorators Manage Purchasing & Billing.

We also manage purchases and billing. Sometimes clients will make their own purchases if it’s convenient for them. But usually, because it’s so convenient for the client, we take care of this for them. This way, decorators can pass on store discounts to our customers. This is a win for our clients!

Interior Decorators Create Beautiful, Functional, & Original Designs.

Lastly, we create aesthetically pleasing areas for our clients. When all the fun purchases come in, we supervise and help with installation of products. We place all the new belongings into the space and outfit the room(s) in the perfect design style the client has always dreamed of!

Hiring an interior decorator is worth the cost. It saves you time and money in the long run. Additionally, It is so wonderful to have someone in your corner doing the heavy lifting for you!

Contact Staged for Living if you would like some interior love in your home.

What Do Interior Decorators Do?

There are so many fun and exciting careers for adults to choose from. I’ve had two that I enjoyed so much! Teaching for er-hmm years was a huge blessing and a career which taught me maybe more than I taught my students. I practiced creating systems, homing in on discipline, life-long learning, and shoring my interpersonal skills. When deciding what I wanted for my empty nest years, I was able to transition so nicely into a career which uses all of the skills I learned for the many years I ran a classroom. Enter Interior Decorating.

Interior Decorators Study Design.

Interior decorators either study decorating at school or are self-taught. We read well-done decorating blogs, home magazines, and interior design books. Interior design books lay out time-tested rules for great design which decorators must follow until they are confident enough to break a few. Interior decorators also watch TV. Or YouTube. We watch design shows for fun and to glean creative ideas and learn current design trends.

Interior Decorators Meet with Clients.

Interior decorators meet with numerous clients. We meet up to better understand their needs for projects. Understanding their wants is just as important! Decorators communicate with customers to establish timelines for projects. Then we clearly show our design processes to our clients, so they know what to expect each step of the way.

Interior Decorators Estimate Costs and Time.

Interior Decorators similarly estimate project costs and create budgets for each project. We have established a pricing system that works for our company. This is either a per hour or per square foot price. I use both, depending on the project. Decorators also estimate the cost of the goods, like furniture and accessories, that we will purchase for the client. That way, the client is aware of the approximate total cost of the project before the work begins.

Interior Decorators Space Plan.

Finally, Interior decorators space plan to make rooms functional, comfortable, and coordinated. We use floorplan creating software to plan spaces. Sometimes even 3-D technology. This helps us and clients see what furniture fits in the space. We also know that thoroughfares are important and account for these in our planning so people can move through the room with ease. In addition, we help our customers choose flooring, paint, wallpaper, and architectural features, such as crown molding or wainscotting. We make sure that these elements work well, or “play nicely,” with each other. Next, we select furniture pieces. I usually select 4 or 5 sofas, for instance, and my client chooses her favorite based on price and other features. This helps customers battle decision fatigue.

What is Interior Decorating?

It all begins with an idea.

After teaching all ages of children and homeschooling my own for er-hmm years, now when curious people ask me what I do, I get to say that I am an interior decorator. My “ACT TWO” as Dave Ramsey says.

Interior Decorating is Part Art & Part Math.

What is interior decorating? Interior decorating is part ART and part MATH. Funny because I always liked art. And I love math. Before the art begins, hours of math are spent. Measuring and space planning are vital to this profession.

Interior Decorators Keep Function and Beauty in Mind.

As an interior decorator, I address wants and needs. Having a tidy, well-run house pleases the soul but so does, say, a beautiful living room. Don’t we feel wonderful and even peaceful when we look at beauty? I get to help clients feel that in their spaces. And that is just fun!

Interior Decorators Communicate Well, Plan Designs, & Create Beauty.

There are also countless technical parts of my new career. Tons of them. Decorating starts with client communication. I must really understand what my clients need and want in their homes or workplaces. Then I measure spaces, create floorplans, research furniture, plan timelines, and make budgets. I sketch designs and create design boards with all my ideas. Then more communication. I ensure balanced décor and cohesive design. I hammer, paint, shop, carry, tape-off, and so much more! Art and math. Lots of Art. Much math.

Interior Decorating, My Act Two.

As much as I loved teaching, and I did, I still do, I am so thankful that I get to enjoy something else creative and oh-so-challenging. Act two has been a blast so far. I am so thankful for my new-found career in interior decorating and my wonderful clients who trust me.
